Two chandeliers can be photographed in the same warm gold and be entirely different objects — one solid brass, one a steel or zinc-alloy body wearing a few microns of it. Price does not reliably separate them either. Four checks you can run in a minute do.
Why the Photograph Cannot Tell You
Brass plating is an electroplated skin — a few microns of metal deposited onto a cheaper substrate, usually steel or a zinc die-casting. It is applied precisely so that the finished object reads as brass, and at any normal viewing distance it succeeds. The vocabulary does not help either: antique brass, aged brass and vintage brass all describe a colour, and a supplier can use every one of them about a plated fixture without saying anything untrue.
Price is a weak signal in both directions. A well-made plated fixture can cost more than a thin solid brass one, and a high price buys a great deal besides substrate — engineering, certification, finish labour. The only reliable answers come from the object itself, or from a supplier willing to put the answer in writing.
Four Field Tests
None of these needs a laboratory and none is conclusive on its own. Run all four and the picture is usually clear.

Mixed construction is the norm, not the exception. A solid brass body carrying plated steel hardware is an ordinary and perfectly honest way to build a fixture — which is exactly why you test the whole piece rather than one arm.
What Twenty Years Does
Plating fails by wearing through, and it starts at the contact points — the arm a cleaner steadies, the collar a lamp is changed against. Once the base metal shows there is no local repair: re-plating means taking the whole fixture down and returning it to a tank, which for a wired, hung fixture in an operating hotel is rarely a real option.
A chemical patina behaves the opposite way. It is a transformation of the brass surface itself, so wear exposes more brass, and it can be re-rubbed by hand on site with the same steel wool and wax that produced it. Where Plated Is the Right Call
Plating is a legitimate choice and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Anything mounted out of reach never meets a hand or a cloth, so the failure mode never arrives. Short-life installations do not need twenty years and should not pay for it: sales galleries, show flats, seasonal fit-outs. And on large arrays where cost per piece governs the scheme, plating over a die-casting is often what makes it buildable. We plate too — polished chrome and PVD are on our finish list, all RoHS-compliant. The problem is not plating. It is plating sold as solid brass.

Please confirm, for each part of the fixture — body, arms, canopy, backplate, bobeches and visible hardware — whether it is solid brass, brass-plated, or another material. Where a part is plated, state the base metal and the plating thickness in microns. Confirm whether the finish colour is a chemical patina applied to the metal itself or a coating applied over it, and whether the sealer is a lacquer or a wax. Please send a 50 × 50 mm finish chip produced on the same base metal as the production part.
How We Build Ours
Our chandelier bodies are solid brass and copper tube stock, TIG-welded by hand and ground flush until the seam cannot be found by fingertip. The colour is a chemical patina worked into the metal and sealed under microcrystalline wax rather than lacquer, so it can be re-rubbed rather than replaced. Finish chips are 50 × 50 mm, shipped by DHL at cost and refundable against a confirmed order above USD 5,000; the warranty is five years on the body, plating and LED modules and two years on drivers.
